Crocus

Poetry by Susan Shea

I would like to be a
hyacinth today
in the well-groomed
garden, only purple
only wearing my own
warm scent

not flax seed green turning
yellow waiting to be pulled
from my ground
or threshed by combine
with others

not zucchini female
flower turning into food
sautéed in dark pan that
will need scouring

only hyacinth
I can sit at your table
in a planter if I must
spread vapors you can
trust to come through right

as I sit atop my globe
of everything I need
sweet bulb of
innocent
